About

In researching family history I have found Wills a wonderful source of information, not just about family relationships but also the details of peoples possessions and their hopes and beliefs.

I have transcribed many of these documents and added them to family trees on ancestry.com. This blog will make them available to anyone and I hope will be of use to people with an interest in social or family history.

For me the documents themselves and the amazing handwriting are a source of fascination and part of the picture of the time. Some of the images are freely available online and where this is the case I have provided links. Others require subscription or purchase and for them I provide reference details.

Court cases are a further rich source of information and I will be adding transcripts and links for some of these in the future.

  1. Hi James
I’m glad you’ve found them interesting. I’ve done Randall Snelgar 1598 and Thomas 1607 and put them on ‘ancestry’ (ROSEG22 Eyre Family Tree) but haven’t yet loaded them here. I can email them to you if you like. I’m happy to share anything I’ve found and would be interested in what you have discovered.

    1. Thank you Rose – yes please I’d be really interested in the Wills from Randall and Thomas – they really contain such interesting insights from the times. I’ve only spent a few hours on the research so far – but will share with you via email what I have found out about the family as well.

  2. Hi – than you for sharing your research, it is a wonderful resource – I am researching my family history name which is Snelgrove and I believe this goes back to William Snelgar b.1502 in Fisherton De La Mare which is the first records of the name I can find, with family then moving to Redlynch and Downton.

It is amazing to read the actual words of members of this family and the relations I have just been finding dates for – in a sense this brings them back to life and is such an interesting connection to the past – Thank you!

I would love to share further information on this family and research as well. James
